Students participate in Applied Private Equity Projects course

This fall, the Notre Dame Institute for Global Investing (NDIGI) offered a new course — FIN 40685: Applied Private Equity Projects (APEP). Kevin Burke, managing director of NDIGI and assistant teaching professor in the department of finance, was inspired to create this course after visiting Harvard Business School last fall.  He saw that pairing lectures with projects bridged the gap between theory and practice, which resulted in accelerated learning and increased student engagement amongst the Harvard MBA students.…

International Portfolio Management course plans travel to Rio, Brazil

The Notre Dame Institute for Global Investing recently announced this year’s one-credit International Portfolio Management (IPM) course will take place in Rio, Brazil. Mendoza students will spend the week engaging in real-world interactions and working on a case study with a Rio-based firm. Case studies like this one, which are typically based on a real-world situation, allow students to simulate the process of analyzing and solving complex business problems. They challenge students to develop their own solutions and then channel these solutions toward a recommended course of action.…

NDIGI co-hosts Private Equity Roundtable with PCRI — Has Persistence Persisted in Today's Private Equity

On June 13, 2017, the Notre Dame Institute for Global Investing co-hosted a roundtable discussion with the Private Capital Research Institute at the University of Notre Dame Chicago campus.  A group of limited partners, academics and general partners met to share their thoughts on performance and persistence in private equity investments. Overall, the evidence suggests that the conclusion was that the once robust persistence of performance across buyout funds has weakened, along with the historical outperformance of private equity relative to the private markets. The discussion among the practitioners focused on the various approaches employed in selecting fund managers, factors influencing performance in the current environment, industry trends and performance benchmarks, comparisons between venture and buyout investing, alignment issues, and the importance of culture. These views were balanced by the empirical research findings presented by academics.  …

Notre Dame juniors Emily Feczko (FIN/Theo ’18) and Marina Simoes Hrosz (FIN/ACMS ’18) were among 60 women selected this summer to attend the prestigious Girls Who Invest (GWI) Summer Intensive Program.  Designed to educate and involve young women in the asset management industry,  the 10-week program consists of two parts: four weeks of coursework at the University of Pennsylvania and six weeks of a paid internship at an asset management firm.…

During spring 2017, one of the Notre Dame Investment Club’s travel teams partnered with the Notre Dame Institute for Global Investing (NDIGI) to participate in the Buckeye Capital Investor’s Annual Stock Pitch Competition in Columbus, Ohio. The team was selected based upon the members’ level of involvement with the Investment Club as well as the Institute. Team members were Lorenzo Beer (FIN ’20), Marina Hrosz (FIN/ACMS ’19), Christopher Gauch (FIN/ECON ’17) and Connor Oleferchik (FIN ’17). Wall Street Club Travels to NYC for Spring Networking Trek

The Wall Street Club of Notre Dame traveled its Student Executive Board to New York City for two days to explore the alternative investment management industry and network with investment professionals. During their trip, the group of seniors visited eight firms on the buy-side of the industry: an outsourced CIO, a venture capital firm, two hedge funds, and three private equity firms.  The hosts led interactive presentations to help students gain a detailed understanding of each type of firm, including each firm’s performance and investing strategies. After the presentations, students were given the opportunity to actively engage with the hosts through a Q&A session. According to club vice president Cameron Perna, “our team learned about decision-making processes, fundamental valuation, and the dynamism of the investment landscape” during the valuable Q&A sessions.…
